About a year and a half ago, when we bought Curves of Rockridge, we were immediately introduced to all the staff members. Right after our introduction to Maria, she announced she was not only leaving her job at Curves but, she was also leaving the country! YIKES! I guess we didn’t make as good a first impression as we had hoped we would.
Fortunately for us, 5-months later Maria returned from her sabbatical to Israel and walked through our doors looking for her old job. Since that time Maria has been an inspiration to all of us. She is a 22 year old college student who is studying to be a Radiologist. Equally as important, Maria is a valued member our Curves team. Since her return she has proven to be a wonderful circuit coach and has taken on the task of teaching our weightloss classes. Maria doesn’t have a secret she simply practices what she preaches; she works out regularly and is very aware of her dietary needs. Since November 2007 she has lost an amazing 49 lbs, 33.5 inches and has gone from a size 22 to size 14! Maria is never off duty; when she comes in for her own personal workout she continues to encourage and inspire our members. She currently has organized a “boot camp” to help our members be better prepared to participate in the Bay to Breakers. This is just one of many extra activities she has done to help encourage our members. Often we get members who stop by to tell us they enjoy these activities so much they are continuing them and getting their families involved. Maria, you are highly respected for your untiring commitment to your own health and fitness. In addition, we greatly appreciate your continued commitment to the health and fitness of all of us. Your dedicated and unselfish efforts set an example for all of us to follow.

Weight loss 100lbs***
For years I had been telling myself that it didn't matter that I was overweight. I was still the same person inside regardless of my size and convinced myself that I was okay. But, I wasn’t okay at all. I was physically out of breath, not able to walk far, had an aching back, hips, knees, etc., and constantly worried about my heart and the stress on it from my weight. My “aha!” moment finally came when I was in a dressing room at the local plus-sized clothing store, and I had to go up another size…again. I realized just how out of control I was and that I needed to change.
I spent the rest of that day soul searching and recalled a friend who works at a Curves in Arizona. I did some research and though I was very nervous, decided to take the plunge. I joined Curves that day and started my journey. I started seeing results almost instantly; I stuck to my meal plan and worked out 3-5 times a week. As I became stronger and more confident, I started trying new Curves classes and challenging myself further. After 2½ years at Curves, I’ve lost 100 pounds** and have never felt better.
The key to my success was realizing what I needed to achieve my goal. So, every day I would push myself harder and I would see more results. My Curves Coaches were there when I felt I couldn't push anymore. When I hit plateaus, they helped me and were there to guide me. Without the support of my Curves Coaches, I don’t think I would have had the motivation to keep going. I no longer get out of breath, have an aching back, knees or hips, and I am off of my high blood pressure medication.
This journey has been one of discovery, as I’ve learned to push myself to succeed. I am so proud to be healthy and strong. I owe my life to Curves and hope that my success serves as inspiration for others. If I can do this, anyone can!
"No more feeling like someone else is controlling my life. I'm controlling my life."
Weight Lost: 58lbs***
In March 2015, I went for a physical exam and my doctor told me that my blood pressure and cholesterol levels were very high, and my blood sugar levels put me in the pre-diabetic category. She wanted to put me on medication but agreed to give me six months to get things under control through diet and exercise. That scared me very much, and that night I went home and told my husband of 31 years about the changes I needed to make. Although it was heartbreaking to me that we were not on the same page, I realized this journey would be one that I’d need to make alone.I spiraled out of control and hit rock bottom in October 2015 when I went shopping for a pair of jeans and needed a bigger size. I was at my highest weight and now on medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol and acid reflux.
In December, I was told I needed a total hysterectomy. I realized what a long and painful recovery process this would be for me, with my extra weight adding to the list of complications I could face. It was in that moment that I vowed to take my life back. I started my journey by going to Curves and cut back on the unhealthy carbs which included bread, pasta and potatoes. I also stopped eating fried foods and the nightly dish of ice cream. The weight slowly started coming off and I even found myself going for walks only one week after my surgery with my doctor’s permission.
Through my transformation with Curves, I began living a life as a strong, confident woman. My weight loss and strengthening experience gave me the resolve to leave my marriage and turn over a new leaf as an independent, powerful woman. Upon return to my doctor just a few months later, I was down 40 pounds**, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved, and I was no longer taking medications, nor considered pre-diabetic.
I owe my life to Curves. Curves helped keep me accountable and challenged me – not only physically, but also emotionally to overcome obstacles in my way. I am proud to be a Curves member and part of the safe and supportive community for women. To date, after 16 months on Curves, I have lost a total of 58 pounds**, and my body fat percentage is down 6%. I still have 17 pounds to go to reach my goal weight, but I know that is not the end of my journey. I am still a work in process, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well. I would not be where I am today without my faith, family, friends and Curves coaches. Today, I am a strong, independent woman and if my story inspires just one person no matter what struggle they are facing, then that is my true success.
